chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

Definition

Compounds consisting of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon atoms that are degraded only by the sun's radiation in the stratosphere, where released chlorine may contribute to ozone depletion. They can persist in the troposphere for 100 years or longer.
